Smiling Pastor

Well… He’s at it again.  Congratulations Joel Osteen.  You were on national television this morning promoting your new book Become a Better You.  I mean… Your Best Life Now was so great!  Really biblical.  I don’t know about anyone else and I don’t want to sound like a jerk but come on.  Joel Osteen is a joke.  Everytime I see his greasy hair and phony smile I feel like I am watching the leader of a cult.  I have never heard anyone preach the prosperity gospel more than this clown.

The Bible that I read, the same one that Joel skims over, doesn’t promise a great life.  In fact, Jesus promises persecution if we follow him.  I can’t believe that he is known as America’s Pastor.  I mean, it makes sense because America is all about getting rich.  Anyway… I just was sick to my stomach watching him brag about his #1 New York Times bestselling book and the millions of dollars that he has made promising people that God wants to make them rich.  God wants you to take up your cross and follow the Son of mankind!

May you repent of listening to Joel Osteen.  Find someone that actually teaches sound theology that is Biblical.  Let me know if you would like some suggestions.  You could begin by reading Velvet Elvis or The Cost of Discipleship.  I love you all and I want you to hear the Gospel of Jesus, not the gospel of JOEL!

LACK

If you haven’t noticed, I have been studying philosophy and Christian thought.  I came across some ideas of Augustine that I found interested and that I wanted to engage with today.  Augustine states his acceptance of the idea that if we equate goodness and being, that we must also equate evil and nothingness.  He goes on to state that ignorance is not a reality.  (That is interesting because I know a lot of ignorant people).  He believes that it is simply a lack of knowledge.  He believes that knowledge is the reality.  Interesting… He also says that weakness is not a reality, but rather it is a lack of strength.  Strength in this case would be the reality.

So according to Augustine, there is no such thing as evil.  What we have is a lack of good.  Obviously as humans we have a lack, but the ultimate good is God because He lacks nothing.  He is the essence of good.  So… it is intersting to ponder whether you accept it or not.  This means that there is no such thing as darkness, but rather a lack of light.  This means that there is no such thing as disease, but rather a lack of health.  This means that there is no such thing as failure, it is just a lack of success.  This puts an interesting spin on things.  See, with this philosophy everything is compared to the ultimate good which is God.  This explains why Jesus is God!  It is because He did not lack anything good.  God doesn’t damn people to hell, but rather it is their lack of acceptance to this ultimate good that produces the consequence.

So… when the Bible says in James  1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him”, there is the assumption that God is the ultimate wisdom and because you are not God you will lack wisdom and you should ask for it.  Jesus is the one thing that we cannot lack in life.  He is salvation.  Remember there is no such thing as damnation, but rather a lack of salvation that only comes from Christ and Christ crucified!

May you never lack in what is important.  May Jesus be abundant in your life and may you never lack salvation offered through Christ!

So… who cares if she watches kids cartoons?

Today I joined the elementary students for lunch at their school as I do every Friday.  I love the chance to eat and fellowship with students from our community.  I was sitting with a girl that I did not know and some other students that I did know.  It is amazing the things that kids will tell you.  As I was sitting there one girl said to me in a voice that made me think it was top secret, “that girl over there watches kids cartoons.”  The first thought that came to my mind was “What does this girl watch?  Anime?”  What made the situation even more strange was that she then proceeded to tell me that tomorrow she was going to tell the whole class that the same girl crys every time that you touch her.  Then it hit me like a brick!  GOSSIP!

Oh my gosh… why am I surprised at how teenage girls are?  They gossip even in the fifth grade.  Anyway, I don’t know what this has to do with anything other than the fact that girls can sometimes be so evil to each other.  Part of the ongoing problem is that adults are as bad as teenagers are at gossiping.  How many times have you found out something that someone thought about you through another person?  Grow up everyone!  Get some “guts” (I guess I will have to keep it PG) and tell people what you are really thinking.  When did it become beneficial to lie and make people feel better.

I told the girl that I watch kids cartoons also and I asked her what she was going to do about it.  She looked at me weird.  Why?  Because when you don’t care what someone else thinks about you then they lose at their own game.  Stop being politically correct and be honest.  Maybe this girl needs to be accepted or she thinks that she runs the world, but someday she is going to realize that life isn’t fair and we all have our flaws.  Quit talking bad about others and get your own life in order.  I hope that this girl knows Jesus!

Someday we are going to stop gossiping and the only thing that is going to matter is if we know Jesus!  I hope that you know Jesus!  He is all that matters.

May you find Jesus where you are!  May he change your life!  May he come and watch kids cartoons with you!  God bless you!

PROTEST

Just yesterday in our small town a store was shut down due to some controversy about them getting a liquor liscense.  They were seeking approval of this liscense in an effort to make more money and offer beer and wine at their store.  Without putting my opinion in the mix I want to say one thing… I HATE PROTESTING!  I cringe when I see anti-bush campaigning and I cringe when I see Pro-Life campaigns with signs.  I want to say this in the most loving way possible, but I think that we must let our life be a testament of our beliefs and we must love others.  Is that not what the bible says?

I have heard all the arguments about alcohol bringing in more domestic violence and more of a chance of stealing and abuse.  But is it the role of the church to condemn and to shut things down?  We have just severed a relationship in our community.

We are all against pornography, but if the people of the church would stop buying it the industry would not exist.  There is strong evidence that a large number of us in the church are viewing it.  Protesting won’t work.  We can protest Hollywood, but if we would stop going to the bad movies, they wouldn’t make them.  We can teach our kids that we need to use polite and non-coarse language, but when we stub our toes what are we saying?  We can tell our kids that they need a relationship with Jesus but that doesn’t do much if we aren’t even willing to go to church with them.  What a shame!

REPENT!  Live a life worthy of the calling and live a life that reflects your values.  It is time to shout without screaming!

TRUTH

“To say that what is is not, or that what is not is, is false and to say that what is is, or that what is not is not, is true.”  - Aristotle

Truth pertains to what we say.  The sky is blue.  To say that the sky is blue is to say something true about it.  To say that the sky is not blue is to say something false.  The flea in my house is not a teacher.  If I say that the flea is not a teacher then I am speaking the truth.  If I say that the flea is a teacher then what I am saying is false.  Truth represents things as they are.  A statement is true when it corresponds to the reality it is about.

Jesus said “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father EXCEPT through me.”  Jesus is truth and this corresponds to the reality in which we are living.  If Christ is truth then the only way to find life is through Him.  Our salvation is dependant on truth and that truth is found in Christ.  It may be harsh and it may not be politically correct, but I don’t care.  It is honest and truthful.  The only way to experience life is through Christ.  You may think that you are experiencing life but what you are experiencing is an illusion offered by the father of lies.  If you want to truely live you must live in Christ.

May you find truth amidst a pluralist society full of relativism.  May you know truth through Jesus personally and may you find peace and hope in his life and his atonement!  God bless you!

Oh by the way… 2+2=4 and it will NEVER equal 5.  I am sorry if that is intolerant!

Clayton James Tucker (i miss you)

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the day that my little nephew went home to be with Jesus.  What a tradgedy.  Yesterday was a great day to be together in worship at La Fontaine Christian Church.  We sang songs of hope together and watched as Clayton’s daddy Matt was baptized into Christ!  Congratulations Matt!  We love you and Clayton would be proud of you.  My wife and I stopped at his grave site and just stood in silence as we remembered.

God in His sovereign nature has the ability to give and take away.  We may not understand his plan, but if it took Clayton’s life to push his father to Christ, what a blessing!  We will never forget Clayton’s two and a half years on this earth.  We miss you Clayton!

Discipleship

Dallas Willard, in writing about discipleship, says this… “Most problems in contemporary churches can be explained by the fact that members have never decided to follow Christ.”  (From the book The Great Omission)

Wow!  Isn’t that the truth?  We have people on TV preaching a prosperity Gospel and telling everyone that if you follow Christ you will receive all these material blessings.  Let me tell you what I know about following Christ…

Following Christ is the most rewarding, and at the same time difficult, decision that you will ever make in your life.  As a result of surrendering your life to the cross you will have to leave some of your hobbies, and you will lose some friends.  Your family may disown you and you may lose your job.  You will be challenged to do things that will make you uncomfortable.  You will vote differently and you will actually read the word of God.  Church won’t just take place on your Sunday and you will be the image of Jesus to a lost and dying world.  You will give money to charity, and you will feed hungry people.  You will give clothes away and you will help and be active in the community.  You will no longer have a life, but rather the life of Christ will live in you.  Your wife won’t recognize you and you will spend time with your family and disciple them.  The family that you have is your most important ministry on this side of heaven.

If you want to accept Jesus to make your life easier, then don’t do it.  It only gets harder.  The way of Christ is a narrow road.  So, in the famous words of an old country song… “drop kick me Jesus through the goalposts of life!”

May your walk with Jesus be difficult and exciting.  May you hear his voice in the midst of all of the noise and may you listen and be obedient.

Man In My Bank

Today I was in the bank depositing some money into my checking account.  I overheard a man next to me talking to the teller about Purgatory.  The teller proceeded to tell the man that she married a Catholic man and he was a believer in Purgatory.  She went on to explain that if you were too bad then you went to Hell, and if you were too good that you went to Heaven.  If you weren’t quite good enough, or bad enough, then you went to Purgatory.

Here is where I was amazed!  The man then said that he wasn’t Catholic but he would sure like to know exactly how bad he could be and still make it into Heaven.  I couldn’t believe my ears.  I am appalled by the idea that we as humans seem to want to push boundaries.  It reminded me of an analogy that I often use…

If someone told you that there was a bomb in a suit case would you see how close that you could get to it so that when it blew up you would remain unharmed?  No way!  You would get as far away as possible for fear that you would get burned.  So then I ask, why would you do this with your salvation which is worth far more than gold or silver?  Why would you risk your eternal destination to see how close you could get to the bad side and still make it into the good place?

The Bible challenges that we have not even a hint of immorality.  So I think we should turn our back on “the bomb” and run as far away from sin as possible.  Live a life of integrity and a life that pursues holiness!

May the God of the Old and New Testament save you from this sin of pushing boundaries.  May you never ask how close you can get to the line, but rather how far away can you stay to maintain purity in all areas of your life.  Love God and love others.  This is not a choice, but a command!

Dedicated?

At the end of the book of Genesis we come to see a new prototype of what dedication is.  Even among all of the Pantheism.  Among all of the Egyptian gods.  The gods that are visual.  The gods that have suns for bodies and heads of a crocodile.  Joseph, a Patriarch, continued to believe in the one true God.  Though invisible, untouchable, and unknowable, Joseph was dedicated to believing in the God of Abraham and Isaac.  Although his God may have seemed so distant in comparison to the visuals of the Egyptian gods, Joseph knew that his God was undeniabley real.

Do you know this?  Are you dedicated?  In a world of many gods.  In a world with gods that have bodies of naked women and heads of dollar bills, do you know God?  Are you dedicated to the God of the Bible or the god of self?  Are you forsaking all other gods for the one true undeniable God?

May you rest easy knowing that all other gods are temporary and do not truely reign.  We worship a God that will reign forever.  We worship the everlasting God!

Don’t literally be salt

In my reading today I was reminded of the story when God instructs Lot and his family to flee in the book of Genesis.  God commands them to flee but not to glance behind them.  You may know what happens.  When Lot’s wife does look back, she becomes a pillar of salt.

I was thinking today about the irony that in the New Testament Jesus tells us to be the Salt of the earth.  I believe that He tells us to be the “salt” for a couple of reasons.  One reason is that salt perserves food.  Jesus knew that He would not physically be around forever.  He calls us as His followers to be the agent that sustains His ministry.  We can be a continuation of what He began on earth.  We can BE the Kingdom of God!  Another reason I believe that He uses salt is because salt makes bland food taste good.  Jesus knows that all good things come from the Father.  If we are in the Father, we can be the tool that makes bad things good.  It is through our life being devoted to Christ we can be the “salt”.

In relation to the Old Testament story of Lot’s wife, I believe that there is application.  God wants us to follow in the footprints of His Son Jesus Christ and to not look back.  Is the world going to look good?  Sre!  Is it going to be hard?  Absolutely!  However, we must live a life that sustains, and exhorts the Kingdom of God on earth!  It is the moment that we turn our back or literally look back that we become “salt” literally and not figuratively.  Be the “salt” but not literally!

Benediction: May the God who sustains life give you the power and energy to be an agent that perserves and continues the ministry that Jesus started years ago.  May you never grow weary of the life to which you have been called!  God bless you!  You are SALT!
